Rather incredibly, AI (Artificial Intelligence) can now create full finished tracks that would pass as human-made. Does this advance in technology ring the death bell for music producers or is this a new tool that helps producers create new music?

Massive companies like Open AI and Google are spear-heading the technological revolution of our generation, AI and Machine Learning (ML). DJs and music producers need to adapt fast and harness the power of AI and ML to help them produce music faster and better and stay ahead of the curve.

Here we discuss How to create lyrics, verses and choruses using Lyric Studio & Chat GPT.

If you want to try this, first use Lyric Studio to create some basic lyrics. I entered the keywords 'Heartbreak' and 'Euphoria' under the EDM category using their free trial. I then created a verse as follows by selecting phrases I liked from the results.

The devil in you is slowly killing me

I can feel you burning inside

I think of all the love that survives

Can you feel the beat inside

There is no place left to hide

Look deep into my eyes

I then entered these phrases into Chat GPT and asked the AI to create a full song with verses and chorus. The result was quite impressive!

Verse 1:
I see the devil in you, it's taking over me
Slowly killing me, I'm losing my sanity
I can feel your fire, burning deep within
It's a feeling I can't deny, it's crawling under my skin

Chorus:
Can you feel the beat inside, it's calling out your name
I'm holding on so tight, but you're slipping away
Look deep into my eyes, see the love that survives
There's no place left to hide, let's take this love for a ride

Verse 2:
I can feel the heat, it's rising up like a flame
But I'm still holding on, don't want to take the blame

Text to Song AI

Now you have your lyrics you could either record the vocals yourself, get someone else to sing them or use text to song AI. T2S AI will allow you to enter the lyrics in text format, choose some parameters like male or female voice, and then generate a song from your lyrics.

This AI vocal track can then be used in your production or for samples. This technology is fairly new and unrefined, as of yet it doesn't live up to human singing standards. There is still hope for singers!

We used text to song AI from Song R App to generate the first verse. The results are quite bad! I could even do a better job myself! If you're interested to hear the results enter the text here.

The total time it took me to generate this AI generated song using Lyric Studio and Chat GPT was about five minutes. It's quite amazing how fast you can create something of such high quality within a short space of time. This now forces us to ask many more questions about using AI to generate lyrics. Discussions about using AI to generate lyrics for songs is a hot topic in the music industry right now.

Here are some of the things to consider about the subject of using AI to write lyrics for your tracks.

Who owns the copyright?

Music revenues are decided predominantly based on who owns the copyright of the music and the lyrics. If you used AI to write the lyrics do you actually own them or does the AI or the developer? In addition, where did the AI gather its data from and is that data covered by copyright? Is the AI infringing on someone's copyright or creativity?

Is this cheating or faking?

Is using AI to generate lyrics and lyric ideas undermining the creative process, allowing writers to cheat and encouraging fakers?

Have writers who have invested in their education wasted their time?

Does the ability to use AI to write lyrics for songs mean that writers who spent years refining their skills wasted their time?

As well as lyric and voice generation, AI now enables you to create music including beats, basslines and melodies. There is even technology that can change a written description of an idea into a full track with various complex musical elements.

‍MusicLM by Google is one of the most famous and advanced machine learning artificial intelligence music generators but is not accessible to the public. To use Google's MusicLM you simply enter a rich text description of the piece of music you wish to generate and using the texts stylistic cues MusicLM will create a piece of complex music, even with vocals. It's very akin to AI image generation, slightly weird, like a dreamy pastiche or memory of a song rather than a defined production. It's certainly the beginning of something interesting.

If you're looking for some AI to generate an electronic dance music track or hip hop track you can try various other apps. One of our favourites is Boomy.com. It will create a rudimentary beat and melody that might help you get started. You may wish to them use this as a template and re-engineer the track in your own DAW.

When I hear AI generated music, I often think it sounds just like the first track someone would make within their first hour of our Beginner Music Production course. It's basic, but a good start!

Perhaps the best way to use AI to help you create electronic music is not to try and find an AI to make the whole thing, just parts of it. AI is much better at refined tasks and the more input data and prompts you can give it the better the results tend to be.

Magenta Studio offer a range of AI plugins for Ableton which will help you produce different parts of a composition using AI. For example, you can ask its AI plugin to produce the midi notes of a melody of bassline.

AI Music Generation Conclusion

There are many questions posed by the evolution of AI and the new ways creators can utilise the technology. There are ethical dilemmas alongside real world legal conundrums.

For example, in 2020 Jay-Z's record label sued Vocal Synthesis for allowing users to generate music using AI which originally sampled data from his tracks. AI impersonations and deepfake music is now a legal minefield that is yet to be disarmed.
